4 out of 5 stars so far so good   January 7, 2008

I wanted a cool moisture humidifier, but w/o the expense of wicks. Just wished Vornado made a humidifier that uses permanent wicks. Anyways, so that left the humidifiers made by Honeywell and Hunter. I was a bit put off by the number of bad reviews of the humidifiers by Hunter. But I also had a terrible experience with one of Honeywell's Quicksteam humidifiers, so I was a bit hesitant about buying another Honeywell, or I should say, Kaz product. But I've been pleasantly surprised by this model. It does make noise. I am used to the white noise, since I have an air purifier. The nightlight is a bit bothersome, since I like to sleep pitch dark. But I can just cover that up with some tape. The noise is tolerable only at the lowest setting. I use it all day long, so you have to replace the water tank daily. I do wish it had a bigger sized tank. The tank isn't particularly well designed when it comes to hauling it, cause the handle is off centered, so it might be awkward carrying a full tank. But that's why I guess they put in the handle on the bottom too. Just an annoyance, esp if you have to fill it daily. But it's easy to clean, since the opening is quite large. I hoped the filter would be more durable, it seems a bit flaky to me, and I think I might easily ruin it someday when I clean it. Can't they come up with a decent reusable wick? Maybe you could substitute a a thick scrubbing pad cut to size, just a thought. The unit itself seems a tad cheap, esp considering you pay so much for what amounts to a pan, a water tank, a filter, and a fan. Oh well, I guess it's a matter of supply and demand, like those $20 vicks vaporizers.

4 out of 5 stars Honeywell HCM 800 humidifier   November 4, 2007

I purchased this product at a retail store recently and overall I think it's great. I was concerned about a line in the manual that said to discard the filter at the end of the season, but when I contacted Kaz / honeywell about it, they said it was a misprint and with proper care the filter will last for the life of the product. Makes sense since that's what is advertised on the box! They got back to me quickly, too.
The machine is not silent, it's got a fan on it which to me provides some nice white noise to block out odd noises that might bother my sleep. It obviously puts out a lot of moisture because I have to refill the tank once a day, and that does as well as the crappy old vicks vaporizers that I used to use...those things were terrible. They made boiling bubbly noises and started to spit when they got old. 65 bucks for the Honeywell isn't cheap (not to me anyway) but the cost was worth it so far. I haven't had it very long yet so we'll have to wait and see how it does in the long term.
Almost forgot- there is a dial control for humidity level; the window is green when the humidity is right, and blue when the humidity doesn't match the setting on the machine. It amounts to a nice night light since I don't know or care how it functions; I just leave it on high all the time.

2 out of 5 stars NOT "QUIET' CARE   February 11, 2008

Well, we're definitely in the age of blurb inflation.
'Quiet Care' must not mean quiet. Should we have known that 'quiet' means 'not louder than a vacuum cleaner'?
Maybe to get a humidifier that actually is quiet, the ad blurb would need to read 'super quiet' or 'unbelievably quiet'. Factually speaking, the 'low' fan setting in the humidifier could be said to be in the highest level of a range that could be construed to be quiet, but the 'medium' setting was like a table fan, and the 'high' setting was the loudest event in our household.
It makes me sad that 'quiet' doesn't mean quiet. Maybe quiet is 'bearable with earplugs.' And most likely it means, 'Well, we're hoping that you'll use it and get used to it...at least enough that you won't send it back.
But we didn't fall for that one. We sent it back and got a humidifier from another company that, while a bit more than twice the price, does twice the job and does it quietly!

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't a humidifier "humidify"?   July 20, 2008
I concur with most of the reviews here - it is not quiet, the light is a lot brighter than it should be, and the filter is far from permanent. After a short season, with a few recommended cleanings, the filter is completely packed with minerals and will not come clean. It's nowhere near durable enough to survive a serious cleaning. On top of all that I can't say that I ever felt that it was actually doing what it purports to do. We have a relatively small bedroom (~200 sq ft at most) and even at low humidity settings the unit never turned off (it has a built in hygrometer of sorts that works like a thermostat on an A/C). Whether or not that is an indication, I never felt that the humidity level in the room increased while this unit was on, despite it going through a tank a day. I'll give it a few more weeks before canning it and buying a replacement.

Be aware that you can't buy filters for this product. If you need a new filter you have to buy a new machine. you can call them at 800-477-0457.
