5 out of 5 stars Fantastic little heater!   November 10, 2007

We live in a 1240-square-foot town house. It has a gas furnace with an extremely loud blower that sits right under our bedroom and disturbs our sleep. We got this little heater and decided, since it can safely be left on all night, to run it as an adjunct to the furnace and see if it might even replace it. Well, that's exactly what it has done. We have put it on the ground floor, under the principle that heat rises, and it sure does. It has a thermostat on it that causes it to shut itself off and on and keep the air around it at an even temperature. We have it set on low heat right now, and the temperature outside is 36 degrees. Our whole house, all three levels, are the following temperatures: Level 1 with the heater is 73 degrees (if we were using the furnace, it would be about 55 degrees right now because the furnace vent is on the ceiling, which is 9 feet above the floor). Level 2 is 72 degrees (if we had the furnace on at our usual 68 degrees, it would be about 65 right now because, as on Level 1, the furnace vent is on the ceiling, which is also very high). Level 3 is 70 degrees (if we had the furnace on, the south side of the house would be about 72 right now and the north side about 64, even though these are the only rooms that have furnace vents on the floor). The furnace hasn't run even once since we started using this fantastic little heater about a week ago, and, as described, we are experiencing an evenness of heat flow that our town house's central furnace system just can't match. We absolutely love this heater, and I'm convinced it is going to not only massively increase our comfort this winter, but also drastically reduce our heating bills. The price of natural gas is going through the roof, but this little heater both uses electricity and, unlike our central furnace, is very energy efficient. I'm going to recommend it to everyone I know. And at a little over $50, it would make a great Christmas present.

5 out of 5 stars Great Heater!!!   November 28, 2007

I was given this heater by my apartment complex during renovations and I was very surprised how well it worked. It is so quiet that I didn't realize that the appliance was on but I definitely noticed the heat!! I love the safety features and I will definitely buy this appliance once I return the heater to the apartment complex.

4 out of 5 stars Great Heat, but a Little Noisy   March 1, 2008
Bought this 2 weeks ago to replace my old Delonghi oil-filled radiator. I'm very pleased with all of its' features, and it puts out great heat. However, it is NOT SILENT in operation, like my oil-filled truly was. This Holmes heater makes a low hissing noise, like the sound water makes when it's heating up on the stove. This is likely not a problem for most people, but I'm one that savors total silence.

3 out of 5 stars Quite good but ambient temps affect heat   March 4, 2008

I bought this heater for my baby's room (13'9"x8'6") to supplement poor heat flow from a forced air system, so safety was my primary concern. It's very stable and good safety features. I especially like the fact it's water filled rather than oil.

However I have noticed that its efficiency seems to be affected by the ambient temperature. The room has external north and west facing walls, which are the two coldest directions at night. On very cold nights, I have to turn the heater to its highest setting to maintain a comfortable temperature, while milder temperatures require it to be turned way down to prevent the heat becoming suffocating. It also takes quite a while to heat up, and I find it's quicker if I turn it to maximum temp, allow it to heat up all the way then turn it down to where I want it - otherwise the room takes forever to warm up.

Overall I'm satisfied with it and would consider buying another one, though I wouldn't recommend it if you want something you can set and forget.
