5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC and VERY QUIET...   February 11, 2007

"HONEYWELL: 18155 SilentComfort Air Purifier"

First off, I'd like to say that this is the only air purifier I've ever owned so I cannot compare it fairly to others so I won't even try. But I've read dozens of reviews about the Honeywell QuietCare 17000 and noticed the main complaint is that it's not really queit at all. Well...I hope this helps.

As far as the noise level goes this SilentComfort 18155 is very quiet on MED and LOW. On HIGH, right next to it, it's about as loud as our dishwasher about 30 feet away. So it's not bad at all. I can still hear the television and have normal conversations with the family without yelling.

I've done some of my own studies to see how well the dust is being pulled into the machine and can see there is dust building up in the pre-filter over time. It seems to work very well. I've also noticed a difference on how fresh the air smells. My sneezing is almost down to zero, when it's running, and that tells me it's really working.

It does NOT have an IONIZER which IS A GOOD THING in my opinion. I've learned that these ionizers omit ozone. Which inside the home this ozone builds up and can be very harmful to the lungs. I did NOT like the sound of that so I turned away from the "ionizer" models.

It is very sturdy, a little bulky, but not too heavy to put in other rooms from time to time when I feel the need to relocate it. It blows cold air, not like a fan and not too direct, at a 360 degree radius(it also pulls from every direction). The cold air will be nice in the summer but it's not so nice right now in the winter. I like to put it next to the bed and it can get a little chilly when my covers come off. It has a very comforting and relaxing white noise hum to it. The motor runs very soft and consistant. No rattling or buzzing of any kind. It seems very well built.

MY ONLY CONCERN is that the return/exhaust does NOT blow straight up. It blows outword on the top/sides and it pulls from the bottom. This may be a brilliant design or a serious flaw? I question...is it just filtering the same air over and over again or is it like a vortex that pulls the dust into it with the pushing air(kind of like a tornado)? In my studies I found that was a tough call for me to make. But it really does help with my allergies so I must conclude that it's working properly.

I ordered it directly from Amazon and it arrived in 4 days(that includes the weekend) and that was with the FREE SUPERSAVER SHIPPING. Amazon is always fantastic about that, so no complaints there.

OVERALL... I am very pleased, though it may be a little early to give a longevity review right now, the HoneyWell SilentComfort 18155 really seems to work great and I have no complaints. If anything faulty or negative develops I will amend it into this review accordingly.

2 THUMBS UP...and I breathe much easier now.

5 out of 5 stars Super Effective   April 3, 2007

Great product. You can really feel (and breathe) the difference in the air when you turn this on in a closed room, although I use it with the door open, too. For allergies and asthma, with its HEPA filter system (doctors I've spoken to recommend HEPA as the best filtration system for these problems), it has made a big difference for me. I had an older model that made a louder, harsher noise. Even on high, the sound from this model is still balanced enough so that it does, as others have commented, create a pleasant white noise effect. Note that it is fairly large and heavy, so moving it around from room to room is not impossible but a bit of a hassle. I haven't yet had to clean/replace the filters, since it's still new. But I like that there is a filter indicator on the unit so I don't have to remember when to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Quietest True Hepa   March 8, 2008

Pros: Extremely quiet on low.
Loud on high (you know it's changing air faster when you want it)
Not hard on the eyes.
360 intake/outake(?)
It's a Honeywell.
Cheap
Permanent HEPA Filters. (clean with a vacuum)

Cons: BIG. Not tall, but wide.

I have done extension research on True HEPA, HEPA Type, LFD, and 3M air purifiers - true hepa being the best, 3M being the worst.

This purifier is the quietest True Hepa purifier I have tested. It is much quieter than the claimed Kenmore "America's Quietest True Hepa Filter," and also much quieter than Honeywell's QuietCare models. I hear some people complaint about how loud the highest speed is. This is not a sensible remark. You WANT the highest speed to be as loud as possible. The louder it is, the more air it is circulating. The question is how silent can it be, when you're sleeping? This thing is so silent, if you put it on the other side of the room from your bed chances are you won't hear it at all. It has half the dBm of the QuiteCare and the Kenmore.

Honeywell's designs and filters are incredible. You'll feel a difference after a day. I have terrible seasonal allergies, as well as allergies to my cat.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet and effective   September 24, 2007

My allergist recommended that I purchase a HEPA air purifier to help with my severe dust mite allergy. I got a Honeywell 18155N SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier. I picked this one, because it is recommended for my sized bedroom. It's rather large, and I don't keep it the recommended 3 feet away from the walls, or else it would be in the middle of my walking space. Even on maximum setting, it is pretty quiet, and actually makes a nice "white noise" which I find almost pleasant as I'm falling asleep. I've found that I'm less congested. I would recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Great Air Purifier   May 14, 2008

I love this air purifier. I bought this because it had a permanent filter. I'm not so sure the filter traps as much particles as a conventional paper filter. This air purifier uses a filter that is similar to a high performance car filter like K & N performance car air filter. It is basically a lifetime filter with an oil coating on it. It allows more air to pass through and relies on the oil coating on the filter to help trap particles. I know for a fact that the high performance car air filters do not trap as many foreign particles as the stock paper air filters, so this leads me to believe that the same would be true in home air purifiers.

I didn't realize this until after I purchased this product but I'm still happy with it. I didn't want to spend the time or money constantly buying new filters for this air purifier.

On the low setting it is very quiet but the unit's fan draws in very little air and as a result purifies little air. My pre-filter had no dust on it at all after I left the unit on this setting continuously for a few days.

The unit is most effective on the high setting, there was a lot of dust on the pre-filter after only half a day. I just use a lint brush every 1-2 days to clean the pre-filter. You should know that the unit is very loud on the high setting and should only be used on this setting when you're not home. It's impossible to sleep with the unit on high.

I'd advise you to use the medium setting when you're at home. The unit is even quiet enough on this setting to sleep.
